The Last Box

It's official! We are no longer living in boxes...sort of.

2 weeks after moving in, we are finally unpacked, mostly. All of our living spaces are, well livable, and we are at the point where we can start hanging pictures. It is pretty exciting since there is a very good chance this is our last move for a long time...at least it is supposed to be. This is an incredible idea to me, I have moved 14 times in the last 10 years. That is a lot of moving.

This move is by far the best move I have ever had. We were organized in our old apartment, were able to set up the kitchen and closets before we moved in, and hired awesome movers. Josh also was on summer break which helped a lot.

By the end of moving day, our bed was made, our dressers were full, and our bathroom essentials were set up. By the time I went back to work on Monday, our bathrooms were set up, furniture was in place, and boxes were all in the rooms they belonged in. During that first week, Josh was an unpacking machine. Every day after work I would come home from and be excited to see what he had done.

Last week was a big weekend. As I wrote in Weekend Reflection, we hit up all of the big box stores. This is my favorite part of moving. I love to organize everything and find a home for each item. As I mentioned before, I'm a huge organizational nerd.

The one thing I hate about moving is that last pesky box. There is always one box that never gets unpacked. Each move, it something different. Sometimes it is school books, other times it is memorabilia, or knickknacks. No matter what is in the box, it never gets unpack.

Last night, Josh and I unpacked our last box! (sort of). Our last box was filled with super random things. It was the last box we filled the morning of our move. We tackled it and now officially box free! (sort of) *We have 2 boxes that are living in our guest room closet. One is full of desk supplies that can't be unpacked until we buy a desk. The other has a few things left in it from our wedding that we are still trying to figure out what we want to do with.

It is such a wonderful feeling to be all moved and know that this is the house we are going make many memories in. For now, though, my favorite memory is unpacking that last box!

Over the years, I have a learned a lot of tips. Every move is different, but there are a few tricks that always help to make everything go more smoothly.

  • It always takes a lot longer to pack than you think it will, so give yourself an extra few days
  • Using smaller boxes is better, it may take more boxes to fit all of your stuff, but the smaller box can be more specialized and makes unpacking easier
  • Label EVERYTHING. Put both the room name on the box and all the contents that are in it.
  • If you have time, set up as much as you can in the new house.
    • Kitchens are the hardest and take the most time, anything you can do in there first is ideal
    • Closets take the second longest. Setting them up in advance is helpful as well.
    • Make sure you stock the fridge and bring cleaning supplies in the new house (don't forget trash bags)
  • Organize! It is helpful for both the moving out part and the moving in part
  • When unpacking tackle one room at a time, starting with making the beds then moving to the rooms you use the most often.
  • Keep lots of snacks around and make sure to schedule meals.
  • Embrace Bed, Beth and Beyond, The Container Store, and Target, they are your friends
